👌🏼 Our tip

Just like with ski resorts everywhere, it’s best to avoid public holidays (Dec 6, Dec 8, Jan 6, April 1) and school holidays (Dec 22 – Jan 8) if you can!

Ski resorts in Catalonia

Baqueira-Beret

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 161 km
🏔️ Runs: 112 (6 green, 43 blue, 46 red and 17 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 4 itineraries
🌲 Cross-country trails: 7 km
🏂 Snowpark: Yes

Baqueira-Beret is Spain’s largest and most popular ski resort. Even the Spanish Royal Family holidays here!

Located in the beautiful Val d’Aran, in northwestern Catalonia, this ski resort benefits from an Atlantic climate. This means warmer temperatures than the Alps and reliable snow from early December to late April.

The skiing here is as extensive as it is varied. The ski area ranges from 1,500 to 2,610 meters in altitude and is divided into four sectors, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re after easy green runs, amazing off-piste powder, or challenging black and mogul runs, you’ll find it here.

If you’re into cross-country ski, Baquiera-Beret also has 7 km of cross-country trails. Snowboarders are covered too, with a funpark and a permanent halfpipe. And if you’re a beginner looking to improve your skills, Baqueira-Beret is home to Spain’s biggest ski school, with 200 instructors who teach in French, English and Spanish.

Once the lifts close, the fun isn’t over! Baqueira has a lively après-ski scene, with plenty of bars and pubs to suit every taste and budget.

The main downside of this ski resort is that , as one of Spain’s most famous ski spots, it can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Plus, it’s the priciest resort on this list.

BoĂ TaĂĽll

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 45 km
🏔️ Runs: 43 (6 green, 3 blue, 20 red and 14 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 4 itineraries
🏂 Snowpark: Yes
đź’¶ Price: Not disclosed yet

BoĂ-TaĂĽll has the highest ski slopes in the Catalan Pyrenees, reaching up to 2,751 meters in altitude, and it’s therefore one of our favourite ski resorts in Catalonia.

Located in the Vall de BoĂ, this resort is known for its pristine natural surroundings. Moreover, thanks to its northern location, the snow conditions are usually excellent.

Its slopes cater to all levels and range from gentle green runs ideal for beginners to challenging slopes for experienced skiers.

For those who like to leave the comfort of the slopes, BoĂ TaĂĽll offers two off-piste itineraries. And if you’re into practising tricks, head to the snowpark. There’s five different levels to help you practice safely and level up your skills.

Overall, we think this resort is perfect for anyone looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a fantastic day of skiing in a beautiful setting.

Espot EsquĂ

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 20 km
🏔️ Runs: 22 (2 green, 10 blue, 6 red and 4 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 5 itineraries
🏂 Snowpark: No
đź’¶ Price: Not disclosed yet

Espot EsquĂ is the only ski resort in the Catalan Pyrenees located next to a national park.

It’s a favourite among families, thanks to its large beginners’ area with gentle slopes and a spacious playground. But it also offers more challenging red and black runs for the bravest family members, with three slopes approved for international competitions.

We highly recommend this resort if you want to mix skiing with other activities. For example, you can easily head into AigĂĽestortes National Park for a snowshoeing adventure or a day of ski mountaineering.

Here’s a map of the ski resort with its ski mountaineering routes and slopes.

Alp 2500 (La Molina and Masella)

Alp 2500 is the combination of two ski resorts, La Molina and Masella, connected by a cable car. Together, they offer 145 km of skiable terrain.

Skiers and snowboarders of all levels are drawn to their sunny slopes, which are just 90 minutes from Barcelona (perfect for a day trip). It’s also a great weekend option for European travelers looking to combine skiing with a visit to one of the world’s most famous cities.

La Molina is wide and open, while Masella has more of a cosy, alpine vibe. You can get a daily pass for just one resort, or a combined pass to ski at both.

During the week, Alp 2500 is a great place to ski, but it can get crowded on weekends with day-trippers.

Masella

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 72 km
🏔️ Runs: 65 (9 green, 24 blue, 22 red and 10 black)
🏂 Snowpark: Yes
💶 Price: 53 € adult / 47 € teenager / 43 € children

Masella, located in the Cerdanya region, is a favourite for experienced skiers, with winding downhill runs, including the longest in the Pyrenees: a 7 km non-stop descent from the top of La Tosa d’Alp to the base, with nearly a 1 km vertical drop.

Besides having this crazy long slope, another cool thing about Masella is that you can ski at night! If you’re staying for a few days, don’t miss the chance to ski in a magical, fairy-lit setting.

Amateurs and families will also enjoy Masella as it has two large beginner areas. One of the slopes is even called Familia, which means family in Catalan.

The lower slopes are lined with trees, and we especially love the winding blue runs that seem to flow endlessly through the lush pine forests.

La Molina

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 71 km
🏔️ Runs: 68 (20 green, 19 blue, 22 red and 7 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 3 itineraries
🌲 Cross-country trails: 4 km
🏂 Snowpark: Yes
đź’¶ Price: Not disclosed yet

La Molina may be Spain’s oldest ski resort, but there’s nothing old-fashioned about it. It still draws the crowds like it did back in the day, thanks to its scenic slopes winding through pine trees and its extensive terrain.

The resort offers 68 pistes across 71 km, with runs ranging from easy greens to challenging blacks, making it great for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

If you’re a freestyle enthusiast, you’ll love the two snowparks at La Molina, where you’ll find the largest halfpipe in the Pyrenees (we’re too scared to try, so let us know if you do!).

There are also 4 km of cross-country trails through the forests and three different ski mountaineering itineraries.

La Molina is an ideal choice for intermediate skiers. You can start with the wide green pistes to warm up, then move on to a great mix of blue and red slopes as you head up the mountain.

Port del Comte

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 42 km
🏔️ Runs: 37 (7 green, 11 blue, 13 red and 6 black)
🏂 Snowpark: Yes
💶 Price: 42 € adults / 35 € children

Port del Comte is located in the pre-Pyrenees and offers 42 km of skiable terrain for snow lovers of all levels, though most of the slopes are perfect for intermediates (reds and blues).

Surrounded by stunning pine forests, this ski resort is a favourite among locals, especially families. There’s also a kids’ snow park, a free ride area, and five snowshoeing trails.

Port del Comte is perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway from Barcelona because it’s one of the closest ski resorts to the city (just 2 hours by car).

Port Ainé

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 26.7 km
🏔️ Runs: 25 (6 green, 4 blue, 11 red and 4 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 4 itineraries
🏂 Snowpark: Yes
đź’¶ Price: Not disclosed yet

Located in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, Port Ainé is a small ski resort mainly geared toward families. While it’s not huge, it offers some of the best ski conditions in the Pyrenees. Most of the slopes are located facing north, making the quality of the snow excellent.

If you’re into freestyle more than alpine skiing, this is the place for you. Port AinĂ© has been a leader in freestyle trends for years. The snowpark even has its own lift and offers jumps and artificial modules for all levels, so you can really level up your freestyle skills.

For ski mountaineering enthusiasts, Port Ainé also offers four different routes in a stunning natural setting.

Tavascan

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 5 km
🏔️ Runs: 7 (2 green, 1 blue, 2 red and 2 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 4 itineraries
🌲 Nordic skiing trails: 12 km
🏂 Snowpark: No
đź’¶ Price: Not disclosed yet

Looking to experience the mountains in their purest form? Tavascan is the smallest and most budget-friendly ski resort in the Catalan Pyrenees, but don’t let its size turn you down.

In addition to the regular slopes, you can also try nordic skiing for the same price, and there are four ski mountaineering routes (info in Catalan), so there’s no chance of getting bored!

It’s a perfect choice if you want a quiet ski resort away from the crowds.

Vall de NĂşria

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 7.6 km
🏔️ Runs: 11 (3 green, 3 blue, 3 red and 2 black)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 2 itineraries
🏂 Snowpark: No
💶 Price: 38 € adults / 28.5 € children / 6 € minors (these prices include the mountain railway ticket)

Vall de Núria is a ski resort tucked in a valley surrounded by peaks nearly 3,000 meters high. One of the main reasons people come here is for the stunning scenery and its remote, peaceful vibe.

The only way to get there is by a mountain railway from the village of Ribes de Freser. This helps keep the crowds down, so you won’t find long lines or big crowds at this unique resort.

That being said, Vall de NĂşria isn’t for everyone. If you’re not a fan of kids, this might not be your place. And if you’re into freestyle, there are definitely better options.

But if you’re into ski mountaineering, Vall de NĂşria has two great itineraries worth checking out!

👌🏼 Our tip

If you go to this ski resort, it’s worth having lunch at the terrace of the hostel Refugi Pic de l’Àliga. You’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping views of white peaks.

Vallter 2000

⛷️ Skiable terrain: 20 km
🏔️ Runs: 13 (3 green, 4 blue, and 6 red)
🎿 Ski mountaineering trails: 4 itineraries
🏂 Snowpark: No
đź’¶ Price: Not disclosed yet

Vallter 2000 is located in the region of El Ripollès, in the easternmost part of the Pyrenees. The resort sits in a glacial cirque within the Natural Park of Les Capçaleres del Ter and Freser, surrounded by peaks up to 2,800 m.

What’s cool about this ski resort is that from its highest point (2,535 m) , you can actually see the Mediterranean Sea on clear days! That’s why Vallter 2000 is lovingly called the “Mediterranean resort of the Pyrenees”.

Unlike some other ski resorts in Catalonia, there are no hotels or restaurants on the slopes, giving it a wilder, more natural vibe. The ski area covers 20 km and has 13 scenic slopes lined with pine trees.

If you’re into ski mountaineering, or want to give it a try, Vallter is actually the birthplace of Catalan mountaineering! It’s the perfect spot to strap on your skis and explore. There are four ski mountaineering itineraries within the resort and plenty more outside of it!
